Musical feature
film, Digital betacam 16:9, color, sound, 70 min
“Welp (Lion Cub), the multimedia event for which Johan De Smet
composed the music, Wouter Deprez wrote the libretto and Frank Theys
made the film, is, indeed, a historically completely irresponsible
and disrespectful – but just for this reason so delightful –
parody on the events of 1302. A hilarious adventure tour through Flanders’s
distant and recent past, that crushes the stuck-up, petty bourgeois,
commercial-minded , intolerant Flanders. (…) Frank Theys made
his film – that is supported by a strong cast of Jan Decleir,
Julien Schhoenaerts, Johan Dehollander, Jacob Becks, Luc D'Heu, Dirk
van Dijck, Leo Madder and debutant Samantha Huysmans, all dressed
in iron, brocade and pantyhose – literally and figuratively
in blood and sweat. And sparkling peppered (Breydel sits in the meat
business) with humor, what appears in the decorum (a Flemish farmhouse
with a well-tended lawn), anachronisms (a radiator in the conference
room, a guarding knight smoking a cigarette) and special effects (
a decapitated knight keeps running around like a chicken without a
head, Machteld flies over a new residential neighbourhood).”
